Saturday, November 14th marked the start of the 2020-2021 Winter Offhand season.\u00a0 The day started out as a very frosty morning \u2013 about 22-degrees.\u00a0 But, there was no wind and it was surprisingly comfortable to shoot.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I heard a single \u201cMy fingers are freezing, or I can\u2019t feel my nose\u201d comment from the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 8:00, it was a frosty 22-degrees; but with absolutely no wind. It looked a lot like Christmas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We have a new software update for the electronic targets\nthat is hoped to fix the \u201cred target\u201d issue we have been having, so we decided\nto shoot this first match on the electronic targets instead of the usual paper\ntargets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new 100-yard range isn\u2019t ready for traffic as yet, so we\nmoved back to 200-yards \u2013 a change from the usual 100-yard match.  Our eight electronic targets would not handle\nthe number of shooters we had for the match, so we decided to explore a feature\nof our system we had not used previously- pair firing.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had the usual start-up fluster of tablets, phones and\nIPads that wouldn\u2019t connect, or stay connected \u2013 but we worked through those\nissues and got things under way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ranger Officers are still learning the system and we started off getting the order of fire wrong.\u00a0 The Left shooter\u2019s scores showed up on the Right shooter\u2019s score column and vice versa.\u00a0 Once we figured out what was going on, we told the shooters to just swap scores and life went on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we went to the second relay, we got the firing order\ncorrect and all went smoothly.  It was a\nlearning experience for the Range Officers to figure out how the multiple\nshooter feature works and several of our shooters had never pair-fired before;\nkind of a win-win.  One shooter made the\ncomment; \u201cI liked that, it slowed me down and I shot at a better pace during\nthe match.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks for all the folks who came out to shoot \u2013 and Thanks for helping us learn how to use the features of our Silver Mountain electronic target system.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh yes \u2013 the improved software looks very promising.  With the eight targets in operation for about\nfour hours (32 total operating hours), we had only one brief \u201cred target\u201d\nincident \u2013 but it cleared itself with no intervention from us.  The system seemed to work well even in the\ncold conditions \u2013 something we had not verified for ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our next match will be the second Saturday in December,\nDecember 12th.  We will shoot on paper\ntargets from the 100-yard line under the porch. \nWe will start at 9:00 A.M. or whenever the first relay fills up the\n12-target firing line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
